Anyone up for a bout of night swimming? We hit the swimming hole tonight at Young Life Club! The night started off with a lifeguard’s version of Rock, Paper, Scissors. There was a lifeguard who beat a tugboat, a tugboat who could peruse a shark, and a shark that would eat a lifeguard. Kids and leaders played with motions included.
A vivacious junior and I entered as two dudes anticipating some late night swimming in a community pool. Our names? Robbin Banks and Robbin Withem. Before we could hit the pool we had to first share our late night favorite treat, “Light and Fluffy,” the creamiest whipped cream in the whole world. We loved ”Light and Fluffy” on our faces, in our ears, down our shirts…we were crazy for “Light and Fluffy.” Eventually, we realized that in order to go in the pool we would need to be clean. I decided to dump an ice-cold bucket of water on Robbin Banks (high school junior) to clean him off. When the second bucket was pulled out, kids in the crowd started backing away. Little did they know that this bucket was not to be a downpour of water into the crowd, but a downpour of candy.
The best part of Club without a doubt was Ingrid sharing about God’s purpose for each one of us. The kids were incredibly engaged; you could tell that the Word was piercing their hearts. She shared how God created humans in his image, and that in the beginning he walked beside Adam and Eve as their closest friend. She shared how God has placed talents, interests, and special giftings in everyone of us, but we get weighed down by the negative things people say about us and by who others say we are. She shared that only through spending time with God can we truly begin to know who we were created to be. "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do". Ephesians 2:10
Kids fill out comment cards at the end of Club which we use to formulate the message for the next week and almost every kid responded saying the talk impacted them and made them think. One kid while driving home said, “I talked to a drunk guy just now at Dairy Queen about Jesus, I think that I might want to do something in ministry some day.” AWESOME!
